Somatotrophs of buffalo -- A histomorphological and immunohistochemical study

Hypophyses cerebri 1521 of buffaloes of either sex of various ages, and in different stages of reproductive cycle of females were used. The somantotrophs (GH-cells) as demonstrated by differential stainings and immunohistochemical methods were usually round or oval in shape and the largest cells of the pars distalis adenohypophysis. In males, their average diameter was 9.3µm at 1 week age which increased to 10.9µm in adults. In adult females the GH cells measured 10.5µm during follicular phase and increased to 11.5 µm during futeal phase and were the largest during pregnancy. Of the chromophils these cells were distributed in maximum proportions in zona tuberalis (48.95%) and minimum in the ventral region (31.63%) of the lobe decreasing order, from zona tuberalis towards rostral, dorsocandal, caudo-central and caudo-ventral directions. The GH cells, in males, constituted 47.15% of the chromophils in 1-week-old calves which increased to 52.04% in 2-4-week-old calves whereafter decreased to 45.3% in adults. The GH cells proportions were considerably higher in adult males compared to adult females and it remained the same during follicular and luetal phases. The Gh cells proportion increased during early pregnancy, but decreased considerably with the advancement of the pregnancy. In addition it was noticed that the follicular arrangement of the adenohypophyseal tissue appeared first by 12 days of age which included few GH cells which the follicles and acini.
