Abstract

Zoometrical measurement was taken in yaks reared at high altitudes (3 000-6 000 m above mean sea level) in the districts of West Kameng and Tawang of Arunachal Pradesh. Based on the visual appearance, the yaks have been categorized into common type Bisonian Type and Bare back type each having an
approximate population of 56.2, 29.8 and 14.0% respectively. Some of the animals that cannot be categorized in any group can be called as nondescript. The shape and size of the horns, the polled or the presence of hom could not be a beadng factor in nomenclaturing the 3 types_ It is likely the types have a bearing on the productive utility of yaks, viz. milk, drought, wool and meat.
