Abstract

Fresh amnion, amnion preserved in 0.5% silver nitrate and fresh porcine skin were used as biological dressings in experimental cutaneous wounds in bovines. The status of wound healing was assessed by histological and histochemical studies of biopsies collected on days 3, 7, 15 and 28 posttreatment. Acute inflammatory changes were more marked in control wounds, followed by porcine skin treated wounds in early stages of the study. Wounds dressed with preserved and fresh amnion showed larger proliferation of fibroblasts and angioblasts when compared with porcine skin treated and control wounds. The density of collagen and clastin fibres was relatively less on day 15 in all the wounds. It increased on day 28. However, the density of collagen and elastin was more in wounds treated with preserved amnion followed by wounds dressed with fresh amnion and procine skin and control wound.
