Abstract

The efficacy of autogenous synovial transplantation in preventing peri tendinous adhesions following tendon allografting was evaluated in 12 crossbred calves divided in 2 equal groups A and B. A 2.5 cm long defect was created in superficial digital flexor (SDF) tendon and repaired with plasma preserved tendon allografts in all the animals. Autogenous synovia was transplanted immediately after surgery and at weekly intervals up to 4 weeks at the site in animals of group B. Less swelling and pain at the site of tendon repair along with improved weight bearing was observed in synovia treated animals. Collagen, hydroxyproline and elastin values were found higher in synovia treated animals. Plasma preserved tendon allograft with synovial transplantation provided better healing than non-synovia treated.
