Abstract

Histomorphological study was conducted on the ovary of22 cyclic buffaloes. The surface epithelium of the ovaries was simple squamous to simple cuboidal. Surface infoldings were absent. The mean height ofepithelium was 5.68±0.04 /lm. The mean thickness oftunica albuginea was 76.26±6.00 /lm. The per cent distribution of cortex and medulla were 76.82±1.70 and 23.18±1.70 respectively. Ovarian stroma was fibrocellular structure. It comprised mesenchymal cells differentiating into fibroblasts with collagen fibres and reticular fibres compactly arranged. No elastic fibres could be seen except at perivascular area. Smooth muscle cells were also observed. All types of follicles were observed in the ovary. Polynuclear ova were also 0 bserved. The interstitial gland cells were seen at locations. The hilar gland cells were also present. The mast cells were seen in perivascular area. The rete ovarii and mesonephric tubules were also present. They were lined with low cuboidal to high cuboidal epithelium. Blood vessels of different caliber were seen in medulla. Corpus luteum and regressing corpus luteum were also present.
