Abstract

Post-insemination effect of 3 antibiotics on conception rate was studied in 150 Holstein x Hariana crossbred repeat
breeding cows. Animals were divided in group 1, group 2 and group 3 having 30,50 and 70 cows. respectively. Group 1
and group 2 cows were given 15 ml terramycin and gentamycin solution i/u, respectively, at 16 to 20 hr post insemination,
whereas. group 3 received 1.25 g dicrystecin dissolved in 15 ml distilled water. The conception rate in group 1 was 16.7%,
26.7 and 16.7% after first, second and third insemination respectively. In group 2 the conception rate was 42.0,26.0 and
8.00% whereas, in group 3, it was 50.0, 24.3 and 8.57 during first, second and third inseminations, respectively. The
cumulative conception rate achieved in group 1, group 2 and group 3 was 60.0,70.0 and 82.8% respectively. The services/
conception also improved in group 3 (1.50) and group 2 (1.55) as compared to group 1 (2.0). This study indicated that even
in the absence of clinical infection, some mild infection may be present in female genitalia which may cause embryonic
death. Therefore, post-insemination treatment with antibiotics may be successful in improving the conception rate.
