Comparative evaluation of nitric oxide synthase inhibitors L-NAME and 7-NI for the management of arthritis in rabbits

Abstract

Efficacy ofNOS inhibitors L-NAME and 7-NI was compared in the management of pain, inflammation and stress caused by chemical aseptic arthritis in rabbits. The animals were observed for various behavioural, clinical and haematobiochemical changes at specific intervals. The results of the study supported the hypothesis that L-NAME and 7-NJ could attenuate the inflammatory response. Both drugs had almost similar synergistic action with dicJofenac sodium in the treatment of acute arthritis. Further, pre-traumatic use of L-NAME and 7-NI had clinically evident preemptive effect on inflammation, pain and traumatic stress in rabbits subjected to induced aseptic arthritis.
