Abstract

Cytogenetic studies were carried out in Hariana, Holstein Friesian and their crossbreds using C- and G-banding techniques to characterize these breed groups and identify breed specific chromosomal markers if any. Blood samples were collected from the animals and processed for whole blood lymphocyte culture. Metaphase chromosomes were subjected to treatment for CBG- and GTG-banding. The diploid number of chromosome in these animals was 60. Prominent C-bands on all the autosomes were observed, while sex chromosomes were C-band negative. GTG-banding exhibited approximately 235 G-bands and no heteromorphism was noticed for G-banding pattern among the genetic groups; however, it helped in unequivocal identification of chromosomes.
