Abstract

The relative efficiency and genetic gain of various selection indices comprising 2, 3, 4, and 5 traits were constructed and compared in growth line of broilers. The data pertained to growth line of synthetic strain of broilers maintained from 1991-94 at Poultry Research Center, Pantnagar. The traits inco~orated in this study included dayold body weight (WOO), body weight at 5 and 8 weeks of age (W5W andW8W), weight gain during 5-8 weeks (WG), feed consumption during 5-8 weeks (FC) and feed efficiency during 5-8 weeks (FE). The 5 trait index (IIJ incorporating WSW, W8W, WG, FC and FE with genetic gain of 21.26 units and relative efficiency of 0.803 is most efficient. Thus it would be an optimum index for selection ofgrowth line of broilers.
