During past few years, Indian major carps in the major aquaculture zones ofIndia, viz. Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Orissa, suffered from bacterial gill disease. The Gramve bacterium, F. branchiophilum was the causative organizim. This is the first report ofbacterial gill disease in Indian major carps due to F. branchiophiIum, which needs proper management practices to check the mortality and subsequent economic loss.
