Abstract

With limited resources which are further shrinking and increased demand for the animal products,it is critically important that growth in efficiency rather than in numbers should be the factol, for the doubling of global output of livestock products expected to take place in the next 25 years. Reproductive biotectechnology can play the major role in achieving this objective by commercialization of artificial insemination, embryo transfer, in vitro fertilization, cryopreservation of embryos, sexing, cloning, transgenesis, stem cell technology etc. This review deals with the available reproductive biotechnologies which are either being used or are currently under development and have potential for augmenting the production and productivity of the dairy animals.
