The status of livestock biodiversity and major concerns and issues relating to present and future use of animal genetic resource to meet the food needs in the changing production environment have been discussed with focus on sustaining indigenous animal resources. Performance and population trends have been studied and stabilization of numbers and breed populations suggested. Analyses of breeding program have been made to suggest actions for enhancing use and development of breeds in small farm production system. Molecular characterization should receive higher focus especially unique genotypes and breeds facing extinction. The other researchable issues include valuation of animal genetic resources and cost framework for conservation. A national policy for management of livestock resources has been proposed.Downloads
