Abstract

The present study was undertaken ascertain the levels of DDT and HCH residues in adipose tissue, muscle, liver and kidneys of goats. Tissue samples were extracted for 8 hr in hexane acetone ( 1:1, v/v) mixture. The extract was partitioned thrice with hexane followed by silica gel column chromatography clean up. All samples of goat tissue were found contaminated with DDT and HCH residues. DDT was the most ascendant pesticide in goat tissue samples with an average of 0.573,0.156,0.208 and 0.060 mg/kg in adipose tissues, musclel, liver and kidney respectively. Among various metabolites of DDT. p,p' DDE metabolite was most reigning in all the tissue samples. Average levels of HCH in adipose tissues, muscle, liver and kidney were 0.441, 0.137, 0.126 and 0.092 mg/kg respectively. Out of HCH isomers, y-isomer was the most predominant followed by Beeta-, alpha- and gamma-HCH. Among the different tissues, adipose tissue had higher affinity for deposition of DDT and HCH residues.
