Abstract

India needs around 32 million tonnes of pulses by 2030 A.D., to feed the estimated population of about 1.68 billion. Global supply of pulses is limited, as India happens to be the largest producer and consumer of pulses. Hence, India needs to produce the required quantity, but also remains competitive to protect indigenous pulses production. Improved technologies, high-yielding varieties and appropriate crop management practices are available. However, a concerted effort by farmers, researchers, development agencies, and government are needed to ensure that India would become self-sufficient in pulses within next decades.
