Abstract

The objective of the present study was to analyze the effect of temperature humidity index (THI) on daily wet average of Sahiwal cows maintained under LRC (Livestock Research Center), National Dairy Research Center, Karnal. For this study daily milk record of about 700 lactating Sahiwal cows during the sixteen years 2000-2016 were considered. The daily ambient temperature and relative humidity records were collected from NICRA center (Climate Resilient Livestock Research Center), NDRI, Karnal. The daily wet average records were associated with daily average THI which was divided into 7 classes (≥45 to ≤50, ≥51 to ≤56, ≥57 to ≤62, ≥63 to ≤68, ≥69 to ≤73, ≥74 to ≤79 and ≥80 to ≤85. The effect of month was found to be highly significant on the THI. The highest monthly average THI values were observed for the month of July. The effect of THI was highly significant on daily wet average (p≤0.01) and decreased in tendency from THI ≥68. Regression analysis revealed that the THI and daily wet average have negative association. Daily wet average of the herd gets reduced by 0.175 kg per unit increase in the THI. In conclusion negative effect of heat stress conditions on milk production was found.
